原來 vi 的原作者 Bill Joy 來頭這麼大 (Berkley Unix 的 creator 之一、曾參與 Sun 的 NFS、BSD 的 TCP/IP Stack 的開發)。


身為 BSD 的開發者之一，他對一般 Linuxer 對 BSD 一些常見的看法有所澄清，與前陣子 Tetralet 那篇<a href="http://tetralet.luna.com.tw/index.php?op=ViewArticle&amp;articleId=210&amp;blogId=1" class="showMoreLink">《為什麼當年成功的是 Linux》</a>對照來看，應可有所體會。


 


另外，他提到了 BSD License 的一些傳統。以前看 BSD License 覺得好偉大，其實聽他這麼一講，好像很自然、理所當然的樣子，沒什麼偉大，學術界本來就是這樣。

談到 Microsoft/Mac 時，他發表自己對產品的看法， &quot;The goal is to build great
products. I have an infinite respect for Steve Jobs because whatever
else you say about him, his passion is to build a great product. Good
things come from that. Bad things come from a focus on market share. So
the Linux community should have as its goal to build the greatest
operating system. Its goal should not be, &quot;Beat Microsoft.&quot; Because
that's a market-share goal. That's a very, very destructive,
counterproductive goal.

文末，他把 Linux 定位在 hobbyists' operating system，不斷用 hobbyist、amateur 來強調，哈哈，不知道 RedHat 的人看到會怎麼想 (1999 有 RedHat 了？)。
